Some people are born with a perfect set of lashes, but for the rest of us mere mortals there is mascara! Mascara has been around since Ancient Egypt. For the modern student, the ideal mascara should be dark, lengthening, separating and long-wearing. But honestly, finding the perfect mascara is kind of like finding parking at UWA on a Monday – you keep looking and hoping until you get lucky. To make things worse, mascaras can be notoriously inconsistent from person to person. The only way to find your holy grail is through a lot of experimentation (although reviews help! Check out my post on the value of reviews here).
When you have a mascara you love, you can apply a few tricks to get the most out of it. Firstly and most importantly, invest in a good lash curler. The undeniable worldwide favourite is the Shu Uemura lash curler (currently available in David Jones). Good quality curlers are also made by MAC, Shiseido and Tweezerman (all available at Myer).
Curl lashes starting at the base (that is as close to your lid as you can get without pinching the skin!) and moving up towards the tip with each pump. This creates a nice ‘C’ shaped curl that opens up the eyes without giving you that Betty Boop look. Once you’ve curled, quickly comb through the lashes with a spoolie to separate and shape them. Then apply your mascara, starting as close to the lashline as possible.
Finally, to create the illusion of added thickness, gently pat black eyeshadow into your upper lashline using an angled eyeliner brush. You can also get this effect by tightlining (applying eyeliner to the upper waterline). Make sure you pre-apply an eyeshadow base to prevent smudging throughout the day.
